I heard that every state has a site where one can go to find if they have money owed to them, is this true?

If so where can one find a listing for the various states? This was a news story on the local News here in south-east Washington state, not just some gossip.

First, go to http://ucp.dor.wa.gov/ to determine if you there is Washington State unclaimed money being held for you. Examples of the types of funds that often end up with the department of revenue include paychecks from employers who can't locate an employee, IRS refunds, unclaimed insurance settlements, utility deposits, old bank accounts, and more.

    2

Once you locate your name (or the name of a deceased relative of whom you are an heir), click on the name to verify that you or your relative lived at the address shown. You will also be able to see whether the amount of your Washington State unclaimed money is more or less than $100.

    3

To file a claim electronically, click on the "Pursue Claim" button. You will then need to create an account by choosing a username and password. After you do this, you will be asked a series of questions to determine whether you are eligible to claim the listed Washington State unclaimed money.

    4

You may be asked to provide proof of your name and address in the form of government issued identification, utility bills, or other documents. If you are an heir claiming property on behalf of a deceased relative, you will need to provide a copy of the relative's will. You can transmit these items electronically using a scanner, or you can take a digital photograph and attach the pictures.

    5

If you prefer to make your Washington State unclaimed property claim by mail, complete the electronic forms until you get to the "Provide Proof" page. Then print this page, and mail it in to the department of revenue along with the necessary proof. The mailing address is:

    Department of Revenue

    Unclaimed Property Section

    PO Box 47477

    Olympia, WA 98504-7477
