Jack Sharkey Questions?

Looking at this mans record he fought a great quality of opposition and on his day was formidable, beating such men as Tommy Loughran, Harry Wills, Primo Carnera, Max Schmeling, Young Stribling, Jimmy Slattery etc. However in all the questions I have seen on here about the great heavyweights Sharkey rarely gets mentioned.

1. How good was he in your opinion?

2. Where would you rank him among the heavyweight greats?

3. Jack Sharkey vs Floyd Patterson, 15 rounds?

Hello my friend and excellent question. At his best Jack Sharkey was a formitible fighter and was well respected. He had tremenendous ring skills and faced 11 opponents in his career who either were or had been world champions and the only man to have fought both Jack Dempsey and Joe Louis, He was a hard hitter but after suffering from several hand injuries became more of a boxer in his career. He defeated the following fighters:

    Harry Wills

    Jack Delaney

    Young Stribling

    Primo Carnera

    Max Schmeling

    Mike McTigue

    Tommy Loughran

    1. How good was Jack Sharkey? Well he was inducted into the International Boxing Hal of Fame so it's obvious that he was really good though he isn't generally regarded as one of the greats and his 2nd fight with Carnera has always been regarded as suspicious even though Sharkey always said it was on the up and up untl the day he died. He was a sharp puncher and an outstandng boxer finishing with a career mark of 38-13-3 with 14 kayo's and one of the best during his day.

    2. Where would I rank him among heavyweight greats? Well I wouldn't put him up there with Ali, Marciano, Foreman, Johnson etc but on a given day he could have beaten some of the smaller heavyweights as he did have talent. He wouldn't beat guys like Holyfield or Tyson but probably would have beaten guys like Leon Spinks, Marvin Hart, the older heavyweights other than Jack Johnson, Ingemar Johansson, possibly Patterson on a given day, of course Schmeling, and Carnera so probably in the top 30 is my estimation.

    3. Jack Sharkey vs Floyd Patterson? Well Johansson did defeat Floyd once so it's not out of the question that a motivated Sharkey who is much better than Ingo could do the same though I believe Patterson's hand speed would have created a lot of problems for Sharkey being realistic about it. So in a one fight scenario, I believe Patterson would earn a tough decision in a grueling and close fight but in a 3 fight series, I believe Sharkey would win at least one fight.

    Have a great day sir!

Jack Sharkey, at his best is among the more underrated heavyweights in history. However there's a reason for this: He was inconsistent.

At his best he was a boxer of great ability and possessed good variety of punches, all of which he could use well. He'd often have victories over bigger guys like Carnera, Wills and Godfrey, along with wins against skilled boxers like Loughran.

However along with those wins were draws against former weltrweight (even if he is an all time great) Mickey Walker, and several losses against fighters of no caliber.

    1. On his day he was extremely good, however the greats have to be that good every time.

    2. No Idea! I can rarely rank any division beyond the top ten. At a guess he'd get in around the top 30 or 40?

    3. There's always a chance with Patterson, always a chance that Floyd's chin gets brushed and he goes flat. Usually when Patterson lost, however, he was faced with an opponent much bigger than himself. Sharkey wasn't a big heavyweight and couldn't match Floyd for speed. Patterson might have been the fastest heavy of all time, even though he was basically a light heavyweight in heavyweight clothing. Ali called him the most skilled boxer he ever faced if I remember correctly. I think Patterson uses his superior speed and hurtful punching power to box his way to a decision over a motivated Sharkey. He knocks out Sharkey if Jack's on a bad day.

    Ok, lets be blunt...

He has the scalps of Primo Carnera & Max Schmeling in the bag... The other guys he has beaten don't really cut the mustard with me to be honest....

His good points - He didn't appear to duck anybody, Joe Louis, Mickey Walker, Jack dempsey to name but a few.... These names on his resume shows he had guts and courage...

The bad points.... There was whispers of match fixing in some of his bouts... He was not generally productive against the big bangers of his era... He seemed to lack the final piece of the jigsaw when it counted the most...

Among the heavyweights - Not in the top 50 ( I did say I would be blunt).

Jack Sharkey vs Floyd Patterson over 15 rounds.... Patterson every time.

Thanks for posting a genuine boxing question - You are obviously not affected by the full moon, unlike half the morons on here tonight.

    he was good

i understand he was getting the better of Jack Dempsey until he got KOd......he also got beat a lot too....even by KO to Primo Carnera i believe

i think he just came up in a tough era when most people were not as trained as modern fighters

he could be compared to someone like Frans Botha in my opinion

i think Patterson beats him by stoppage in 8

Founded on his form and punching power i would say he would rule the heavyweight division. He used to be a bully fighter that would relentlessly pursue you after which dump on you. People like the Klitschkos use their attain to field away at their opponents and maintain them faraway from their glass jaws. A glass jaw in opposition to a guy with scary punching vigor like Dempsey is going to get you flat for your again on the canvas. They would often keep him away for 1-2 rounds at first-rate earlier than he slipped their reach and believe me he would slip their reach. He would not be just like the heavyweights in these days and simply quit looking to get underneath them and simply go the distance. He would preserve coming forward and throwing. I suppose very strongly that it might handiest take one punch from Dempsey to finish the night time of either Klitschko brother. The division is lifeless at present and Dempsey was a legend who close to cleaned out his and would do even higher now. Folks say he ducked black opponents however Dempsey would combat anybody that may supply him a paycheck and he signed to battle black combatants always but it was his promoters and the racism of the day and no longer Dempsey that prevented these fights from happening.
