I heard they put healthy animals to sleep by the owners request is that true?

My dad used to work for the humane society and said people can have their pets put to sleep even if they are nice healthy young pets if that's true it's pretty messed up.

Update:

Sisyphus you are fat and lazy and you will die before me.

I know its true its pretty sad though my grandma put one of her dogs down just because it pooped on her carpet. But personally think if you dont want your pet you should put it up for someone to adopt so the poor thing has a chance to live

I'm not sure about Humane societys but at the vet I work at, there has to be a legit reason why you want the pet to be put down. Not to long ago, someone dropped a pet off at our clinic and they said they wanted him put to sleep, no reason at all, so one of the vets ran a ton of different tests, found NOTHING wrong so she over ruled it and said she's not gonna put the cat down, the owners didnt want him anymore though.

but anyways, some place might be different, so I'm not sure, guess it depends on the place

it is true ... a neighbour had her dog put to sleep, a beautiful dog, because she could not "train the anxiety out of it" ... and it was the neighbour who was neurotic, not the dog ... and this dog, when i would sometimes walk or dog sit it, was a perfectly well behaved dog ... on walks, with other dogs, it was playful, and she walked it into the vet and said she had tried everything and it just "wasn't fair" to the dog to have to live with that anxiety and paid to have it put to sleep ... it made me want to punch her ... even to this day i have a hard time looking at her ... and she has another dog (that she had with the "anxious" one) and when i did bump into her a couple weeks ago she told me the other dog has "never gotten over" the death of the other dog !!! holy moly she is crazy ...
