Why does rachet mean and is it a bad word? ?

    Apparently in some places it IS a bad word - but then, in some places, everything seems to be.

    What would be a term as "Thinking" described has now been made into this:

    I don't know who writes this stuff, but it sounds like you should be aware of this (or these) meaning before you use it. But a ratchet is still a tool, and to ratchet something up is to crank it or wind it up - which could be a campaign, noise or an argument as well.

    It originally meant to a toothed control in mechanics. Now, 'racheting up' means increasing effort.
