What are some interesting/cultural sites in Manhattan?

Hi. So my friend is going to New York soon and he'll be staying in Manhattan. Culturally as far as music is concerned, he enjoys folk/rock or indie-rock music as he is a singer/songwriter and any aspect of such things..Nothing like night clubs but actually perplexing spots like museums, places for live gigs, etc would all be good. Culturally rich as New York is known for. Thank you.

Update:

He's from from the UK so something different that they don't have there would be nice

Anywhere in downtown Manhattan, east village, greenwich village, gramercy.. Also there are a lot of neighborhoods in Brooklyn he'd like.. Williamsburg, Park Slope, DUMBO, and Brooklyn Heights are all very rich in culture and have a good night scene.

The East Village you got tons of hipsters and musical hopefuls, at Tompkins square park you can usually found someone playing. Sometimes its old Puerto Rican men playing some salsa and then other times its a rock band. Should be a nice place to visit. Just stay away from Ave D which is a several blocks away, the neighborhood can be sketchy.

Well, there are hundreds. Get a NYC travel guidebook from your library/bookstore or use some of the many, many Internet guidebooks and other sources, e.g. TripAdvisor.com.
