Atheist Think Life is Over When You Die?
I'm an atheist, in a way. I subscribe to science and logic rather than theism and superstition, but I hear many people who are self described atheists say life is over when you die, and this is the last ultimatum. This is completely counter intuitive on a philosophical level, though, even when considering this through the lens of science.
If science is correct, we are composed of atoms, light, and energy. This is the the same for everything else in the universe. Taking this into consideration, this means that we are a piece of the universe, just as much as a wave is part of the ocean, or a branch is part of a tree. We are not independent of the universe, and this is a clear fact. Like all matter, we change, as can be seen daily with the trillions of lifeforms that die.
Energy does not die , and even if it does, existence will continue on in whatever form it may take. We are only part of this universe, this moving changing basket of energy, so to say when we die that everything ends is foolishness. This is the same as saying that when you die, the universe dies too. When a branch breaks off the tree, does the tree die? No, new branches grow, new trees will grow beside it, and the cycle will continue. Like a wave in the ocean, the cycle of beginning and ending, life and death, new and old, life goes on, the universe goes on. To say that it is over when we die, that we cease to exist and that is all, and all there ever will be, is like saying our small insignificant lives, these snapshots of the existence that we call life, are independent of the universe.
It isn't over when we die. This is almost narcissistic to think so, and suggestive of our primitive, cave man outlook on our state of being. An answer so simple and obvious, that none of us can see because of our small, animal minds. Look up at the sky on a clear night and see the immensity of existence. This is where we go. This is where we end up. It "reincarnation", but with out the idea of a soul. It is beyond us to conduct further insight into the details of this truth, just like it is beyond an ant to know the details of its greater surroundings, or the killer whale to know whats beyond its waters, just as the human will not know what's beyond its earth. We are ants, and when one dies, another comes in its place. Only, we may wake up in some alternate universe, unable to know the details of what occurred during all of existences past creations, limited by the senses the universe gave us to understand. The possibilities are endless of what we will experience in our next conscious existence. The universe is beyond our scope of understanding because it is so big.
There is no end, there is only change. It is easy to see, only we look from the wrong angle, considering human life as independent of the environment it is made . You are not you, in the general sense of the term, you are a collection of parts and part of this universe. To think that death is the ultimate end is wrong. Life will go on, and so will you. Look up at the sky, this is where we go, and it will go on, as everything will. What is this all powerful creator? It is right in front of our eyes, it is the universe, existence, and we are a part of it.
If it is limitless and it doesn't end, than the possibilities are infinity. We could have lived this life trillions of times already. We, the universe, could have been trillions of things before we lived this life, and we are only experiencing a snapshot of it. It should give you goosebumps when you truly realize this, it should bring you tears of joy. Such a beautiful expression, existence. Such a wondrous blasting tirade of occurrence, whether living, or non conscious, the sheer fact that it even exists at all is amazing. Just imagine if there was nothing, nothing at all, nothing ever, and there never was and never will be, wouldn't that be just, unbelievably dastardly, cruel, wrong, terrifying. It would be impossible; just nothing, ever again, life, stars, planets, anti matter, particles, galaxies, and whatever is beyond that we cannot see, just nothing. It isn't possible. It would mean there isn't just death, there never was death, there is just nothing, not even nothing because for nothing to exist there must be something for there to be a consideration of a nothing. It makes you want to cry to even consider such a thing.
No, it doesn't end my friends. Death is not the end. It is almost silly to think such a thing
Wow the answers I'm receiving indicate that nobody understood the point. It's my fault for not highlighting the main points enough. I will try again to help you understand what I was pointing too
We are part of the universe, not independent of it. Therefore, the answer to human kinds most asked question, "what happens when we die?", is obvious. Since we are energy, and since existence is permanent, we are permanent too because we are part of existence, energy and the universe. To say that death is the supreme ultimatum of life is almost silly, because of this. That would be the same as saying the entire Universe dies when you die, hence why I used the word narcissistic, which is harsh speech, and a better term would have been self centered. Both mean the same thing, but the former has a more derogatory aura - sorry. Death is only a tranformation, and we will in a sense become reincarnated, since we are not a self, but a piece of an environment, like a br

Well, who's to say that we won't exist in some other inscrutable form when we die? We may just reincarnate and live another life as a different organism, who knows, eh? That's what many mythologies have depicted throughout antiquity. It's at least a little more amusing or interesting than saying we're just obliterated forever into nonexistence, etc.

I didn't read all of what you said but it sounds interesting though. No, I think death is not the end. After death, you either go to Hell or Heaven. I also think there's life after Hell and Heaven. Really. I believe that after living in Hell or Heaven for like I don't know 400 years, we go down to earth once again and live the world like we do now, but in a different body, country, time and situation. And it continues so...

There is no scientific evidence that any piece of your consciousness survives. All the existing evidence is that consciousness is a product of processes within a living brain. If there is no consciousness, then in what sense am I -- the person writing this -- alive. If you culture my cells and the main body dies, am *I* still here? Sure, the matter that makes up my body will cycle through the universe, but in what sense is that *ME*?

I think that while energy is neither created nor destroyed it is no longer organized in a way that is consistent with what most people think of as them continuing. The brain is the source of consciousness, memory, feelings, etc., and that breaks down when you die. We return our fundamental elements to nature but I see no way or reason to think that constitutes the individual so to speak continuing to exist. In a sense those your individual elements do go on so death in that way is not the end. Its just most likely the end of that individual in a physical sense.

Technically, *life* is over when you die. If you want to be philosophical and argue *existence* continues after death then that's a different issue.

But you wont think when you are dead, so your personality and brain and body are gone. I may not write big fancy paragraphs, but when it comes down to it, you are ignoring what athiests mean in a literal sense. We may go on, but the person, as a person is gone. Its funny because when you are dead, all of your narcissism brought on by your 'superior logic' will mean nothing, because you are dead :P

I have seen your posts on 9/11. You can not possibly subscribe to science and logic and hold as irrational and uninformed views as you do.
