Can the city make you rebuild a burned-down house?

If your house burns down, is it legal for the city to require you to rebuild on the same lot?

Update:

It sounded ridiculous to me too, but I thought maybe in some perverted legalistic BS type of way, maybe they could nail you for it. I could totally see clearing the lot, but forcing a rebuild? Seemed sketchy to me.

No, but they can make you clear the lot. If you don't do that either, you will be fined.

They can require you to either fix it or tear it down.

You can not leave a burned out shell.

It is a health and safety hazard for the neighborhood.

WHY are you so damn frikkin selfish?

No. Of course not. No offense, but do you even realize how stupid that question is?
