I need help. Did I do this right?
I had the equation l2x-5/3l = 7
2x-5/3 = 7
2x-5/3*3 = 7*3 --> 2x-5 = 21
2x-5+5 = 21+5 --> 2x = 26
2x/2 = 26/2 --> x = 13
2x-5/3 = -7
2x-5/3*3 = -7*3 --> 2x-5 = -21
2x-5+5 = -21+5 --> 2x = -16
2x/2 = -16/2 --> x = -8
I keep getting where the -8 doesn't fit when you plug it back into the original equation l2x-5/3l = 7. Am I doing my math wrong or is there really No Solution?
When I multiply by 3 I'm using the Multiplication Rule of Equality. I don't distribute.
Matt, THANK YOU SO MUCH. I'd pick yours as Best Answer, but it won't let me right now... Later.
-16 -5... Man, I was adding there. Explains so much.

I'm assuming you meant |(2x-5)/3| = 7; make sure to use parentheses when necessary.
In that case, x = -8 does work in the original equation:
|(2x - 5) / 3| = 7
|(2 * -8 - 5) / 3| = 7
|(-16 - 5) / 3| = 7
|-21 / 3| = 7
|-7| = 7
7 = 7
Hope that helps! :)

You forgot to distribute when you multiply by 3
2x-5/3*3 = 7*3 --> 6x-5 = 21
then you should get the right answers which happen to be:
x= -8/3 and x =13/3

2x-5/3 = 21/3
2x = 26/3
x = 13/3
2x-5/3 = -21/3
2x = -16/3
x = -8/3
Answer x = 13/3 and -8/3

|2x-5/3| = 7
|-6x+5| = 21
So you have 6x = 26
and -6x = 16.
Solutions would be...
x = -8/3
and
x = 13/3

in your first line where you multiply by 3 you need to multiply the 2x by 3 as well which will make it 6x
