Local anesthesia is used for this procedure. You will feel the initial needle entering your skin to give the local, once that is done you will feel pressure but should not feel sharp pain.

You may also receive a mild sedative or pain killer prior to the procedure start to help relax you.

    Good luck!

If you are referring to having something like a chest tube inserted to drain a pleural effusion, then yes it can hurt ALOT!-- every case is a bit different. Insertion of a chest tube can be excruciating but typically the relief is worth it. Liberal and copious amounts of local anesthetic are a good thing here if you can tolerate them. I have gone in before for fluid around my heart and or lungs and always managed to talk them into using ferosemide (Lasix) to just drain it via the internal way--the natural way. Chest tubes should only be used if there is an absolute need as in the patient's life is in danger or there is extreme restriction on the breathing or circulation, as infection is a very big and real concern with these procedures.

    Best Wishes

It is not supposed to hurt at all. However, if inadequate novocain is given, it can be painful. When you feel the pain, you should say it hurts. Then they can give you more novocain. Don't just sit there and bear with the pain until it is over. You just need to be very vocal about it. At the start, be very upfront e.g. if it hurts me, I will hurt you back etc. Be very clear that you will not tolerate any pain and you will sue them for pain and suffering. By this, they will give you the care you deserve.
