Is it appropriate to audition for only one role in a show?

you can try out for the roles you think you fit. the casting director might pick you for something else

if they don't think you can handle the parts you wanted. if you have the ability to handle lead parts, don't feel bad about trying out for them.

Sometimes there is a place for suggestions on the form but if there isn't... sorry but yes you will look like a diva. If you really want one of the leads, pick an audition piece that reflects the character and study up on that character to prepare! Break a leg!

I’m a director and an acting coach. I’ve never cast a single actor who told me they would only do the lead. Ever.

Having said that, it’s your life. If you only want leads, and you let everyone know that up front, then all the power to you. BUT remember, this craft, whether stage or film, is a collaboration. If you appear to be the antithesis of a team player, unless you are amazing or already famous, you won’t be looked upon too kindly.

I would try for roles that aren't the lead, especially if you are new to acting. But if you do very well, they might want you to do a smaller role or even the lead if you're top notch. Say you audition for the lead only and you do pretty well, they might ask you do audition for a smaller part.

Nag lots of people try out for only the role that they want however I would sugest trying sevral roves as you may not get the lead role
