If you are near the poverty level, there is some federally subsidized housing near the stadium—quite a bit of it really.

If you have to pay your own way, choose between inexpensive, close, and acceptable. You cannot have all three at once.

There is lots of student-style housing near OHSU and Terwilliger Blvd., and near PSU. Amenities are lacking, but most of it is well located and modest expense.

If you give up being close to downtown, there are some nice rentals in Johns Landing, Lair Hill, and further north in NW.

Safe, close in, affordable...my opinion of each of those conditions may be different from yours...that said: look in the East Portland\Hawthorne area of the close in SE. Between E. Burnside and SE Hawthorne, along Belmont, Stark or Hawthorne Between SE 6th and SE 39th. You can use the Hawthorne Bridge to get downtown and the bike lanes/streets and connect to the Springwater Trail.

The Irvington area bordered by NE Fremont and NE Broadway between N Williams and NE 33rd is an alternative...it is a bit more expensive but it gets you into the core area via the steel bridge. You can walk that area easy enough and connect to the East side prom.

    Good luck

um in ANY are that is safe that a one bedroom APt. will START at 575 a month and that will be ATLEAST 7 miles from Downtown portland. Anything within 2 miles of downtown portland will START at 800 bucks a month.

i think that here might be some apartments up by OHSU, near downtown that will start at 700 a month, Which is VERY near downtown.
