Do you think this is too expensive?

I have put together a comprehensive history of my family, particularly my great-grandfather, who served in the Civil War. I have put together a book that includes a family chronology, historical data, lots of photographs (family and historical), a complete family tree, and a calendar of family birthdays and anniversaries. It will be over 150 pages when all done. I will have it professionally printed & bound and it will end up costing around $13.00 per copy. Do you think this is too much? I did a first edition of this 15 years ago and sold about 40 copies. Do you think it is realistic to expect to sell that many again this time around? (We send out about 65 invitations to our family reunion every year, if that gives you any type of ballpark estimate. All of the people invited to this family reunion are descended from the same man.)

Update:

Actually, I'm having it printed up through the graphics shop at the place I work at. They will print it for me at cost and because they can print two-sided, it will not be too expensive, and I can even get color on some of the pages (for extra, of course). I probably should do more comparison shopping but these folks are very patient with me which is worth some extra money to me!

Not at all. $13 for 150 pages is less than 10 cents a page, which means you're barely covering the cost of printing alone.

Before you have a "professional" print company I would suggest that you got to LULU,com, which is a self-publishing company online what does wonderful work on this type of project. From the prospective of covering cost, it is not unusual to pay $25-50 per copy for family histories and LULU can help you with setting the price so you do not loose money on the project. When your project is completed you might also have a copy sent to the National Archives for preservation, many people fail to do this and they work is eventually lost within the generations to follow.

Sounds like you put a large amount of quality work and time into your project. 13 bucks is a very reasonable price for all of that

    No. It's reasonable.

Source(s): I am a printer by profession, for the past 42 years, and have printed my own genealogical studies as well as those of others. This is a bargain compared to the "old" days.
