Could someone try to tell me what tomatillos taste like?
I just learned that tomatillos are not related to tomatoes, but are a member of the gooseberry family. I hate tomatoes, but I love berries. Would I like tomatillos?

I didn't know Tomatillos were related to gooseberry. I never had gooseberry's. But I can describe tomatillos as tasting like little, firm, green unripe tomatoes. not sweet but not too bitter. I boil them, then put them in the food processor with cilantro, garlic, onion, salt, and hot pepper such as jalapeno or serrano and walla! you have salsa de verde.

They are a firmer texture than a tomato, not quite as juicy and they are tart with a delicate and more vegetable like flavor. The tartness is more dominant than the actual flavor, so I would categorize them as mild flavored. To me, they don't resemble a tomato in flavor at all. They don't bite like a tomato can because they aren't as acidic.
I make a chile verde (green chili) out of them with lots of onion, garlic, green pepper, pinto beans, chicken, and dry pan-roasted cumin seeds or cumin powder, and unsalted chicken broth. Add salt and cayenne as desired.
Lots of the green salsas have a good amount of tomatillo in them. Some have green or yellow tomato added, so check ingredients.
Tomatillos are great made into salsa in that they are good raw and chopped fine. They soften when cooked or fried.
If you buy them, check for firmness. If they still have that papery shell that they are protected by on like gooseberries also have, just pick it off and wash the slight stickiness of the tomatillo off with cool water.

I think they have a bit of a sour flavor, kind of like an unripe tomato. You don't really eat them plain. They tend to be cooked in salsa (salsa verde, for example) or in other Mexican dishes. Some people like them and some don't, so you'll have to try a tomatillo dish to be sure.
Also, gooseberries don't taste like berries at all. They look and taste much like a grape, but are firmer and really, really sour. People don't really eat them plain. They also tend to be cooked, and are found in both savory and sweet dishes (with a lot of sugar added!).

I don't know what a goose berry tastes like but they aren't remotely like any other berry I've ever eaten;.
