We are having a baby at the end of the year and my debt to income is very close. I make about 3000 a month.

Well usually you should spend about a month to half a month pay check or less for a enegagement ring. Never more unless your bride to be is one of those women who want giant rock that more than a carat big and VVS quality. Also always shop around to look for good prices. What I know many jewelry stores especially the ones in the mall charge 300% for what the jewelry actually worth. If you know where to shop you can actually get a really nice quality ring with about a carat diamond for less than $2000. If you don't care about diamond size go for something simple and you could probably spend less than $500 for getting a custome made one. Don't be afraid of second hand diamonds ring because they are still diamonds rings. Try some Asian jewelry store too they tend to get the best deals especially if you know how to bargin. Would be best if you know someone who actually know how too look at diamonds too come along with you.

Not much. You shouldn't be going into crazy debt over a ring. It's just a ring. You're having a baby, so I'd say you're already pretty committed to each other.Get a ring later on down the road when you can actually afford it, and then give it to her an an anniversary gift.

Nothing for now - you seem to have skipped the engagement altogether.
Have a simple ceremony and wedding rings, and when the baby is born, get her a nice string of white pearls - they don't have to be horribly expensive, and you should do that. Then later on when you are on your feet, you can shop for a ring - but when she is very pregnant or handling a newborn, she won't be wearing a rock anyway.

Dont go crazy. You have a baby coming and that gets really expensive. Belive it or not go to Sams club. The have beautiful rings in the $1500-3000 range. I was looking there tonight and they have some really nice ones. They are much cheaper than going to a jewelry store and much nicer!

It's a personal choice and depends on how much you cab afford. My fiancé took me shopping so he could see what I like and then went back when he was ready and picked on. He put it on layby so he could get something a bit more expensive. Find out what she likes and go from there. Some women are materialistic and like huge rocks where as some just like something pretty. Make sure you look at the 3 "C's" Cut, Colour and Clarity. Find out what type of cut she likes in a diamond. Mine is princess which is square but if you talk to the jewelers they will be able to explain everything in detail.

Only spend what you can comfortably afford - there are lots of nice rings for a hundred and up.
