How to restore shine to a cloudy clearcoat?

So I got keyed awhile back, and I had read on here that if you take rubbing compound you can blend the paint to hide the scratches. So I did that with some Turtle Wax Rubbing Compound and it worked somewhat but what I did not notice until later was that, it had made the clear coat look cloudy. This is all on the right middle of the tailgate. My question is to you guys what works best to restore the shine to the clearcoat? Because I would really like my tailgate to look normal again. Thanks in advance.

you cannot use rubbing compound on a clear coat like that. you need to go get professional information instead of reading something that is false. Now that you know what not to do you need to go to a professional body shop and see if they can fix the mess you made. I don't know what color your tailgate is but they may have to sand it and repaint it and clear coat it again to make it look right for 500 to six hundred dollars. In the future you cannot make anything blend with rubbing compound. all you can do with a scratch is leave it alone like most people and chalk it up to normal car problems ar use a touch up brush which is not perfect up close but looks ok or do what you are going to do pay someone to do the job right. Life happens to all cars and trucks you can leave it in the garage and not drive it or expect to get scratches and dents its part of car ownership no one likes it but we have to tolerate it because professional touch up is expensive as hell. good luck next time leave it the hell alone and go get a free opinion from a body shop ok?

Rubbing compound is an excellent first step.

The problem is that rubbing compound is a little too coarse to provide a nice shiny finish.

You can try using a good quality liquid polymer wax and see if that will fix the problem.

If not, you may need to use a polishing compound to get the shine back.

Polishing compound is very similar to rubbing compound with the difference being that polishing compound is a much finer grit and will help to restore the proper finish.

Follow this up with a good quality liquid polymer wax and you will be fine.

This isn't exactly rocket science and it's not something that you will have a problem doing yourself.
