Legally and politically, it is a Secular nation. It was designed that way because the founding fathers didn't want to repeat all the wars and killing caused by competing religions in England and Europe. The Constitution prohibits any officially recognized or favored state religion, and freedom of religion means the state must treat all religions as having equal standing under the law.

Demographically it is Protestant 51.3%, Roman Catholic 23.9%, Mormon 1.7%, other Christian 1.6%, Jewish 1.7%, Buddhist 0.7%, Muslim 0.6%, other or unspecified 2.5%, unaffiliated 12.1%, none 4% (2007 - CIA World Factbook).

State laws which prevented Jews, Catholics and Quakers from voting were struck down by the courts in the 1810s.

It is impossible for any nation to be a Christian nation. The reason why is because true Christians look to Christ's ruling kingdom in heaven to solve problems, which the Bible says it will do in the near future. In fact, Daniel 2:44 makes it clear that human governments stand in opposition to God's kingdom through his Son Christ Jesus. It says that God's kingdom will destroy human governments and it itself will act as the sole theocratic government for the entire earth. (Compare Revelation 16:14, 16).

This explains why Christ Jesus withdrew from the people who were coming to make him king. (John 6:14, 15) If a man like Jesus Christ lived today, wouldn't it be logically to make him President -someone who was superlatively wise, could heal the sick, raise the dead, and feed the hungry? Of course it would make sense, and it made sense in the first century, too. However, Jesus knew that his purpose on the earth was not to rule human governments, but to teach people how to acceptably worship and draw close to his Father in the heavens. He was also sent to serve mankind and give his life as a ransom to buy back what Adam lost out on. - Matthew 20:28; Romans 5:10, 11.

Now that Christ is King of God's kingdom, he has invited the nations to submit themselves to his superior rule, but they refuse. (Psalm 2:8, 12) Instead, these human governments choose to hold on to their power in vain, choosing, in essence, to be ruled by the Devil, the invisible force behind human governments. (Matthew 4:8-10; 2 Corinthians 4:4; John 12:31; 14:30) This explains why the following things are taking place in the US and around the world: Immorality , government-backed genocide and other forms of terrorism, red tape that keeps the needy from being helped, inflated egos who refuse to admit when there is a problem, war, abortions, slavery, and prostitution of adults and children. These things are so rampant in different lands because, again, the Devil is the ruler of this system. But the good news is that his rule is short lived. Soon God's kingdom will step in and make everything right, as was already mentioned.

Since God's Kingdom will soon destroy all human governments, none of them can be said to be a Christian nation. Most of the members of the US government or the citizens may claim to be Christians, but Jesus Christ said that it isn't important how people see themselves, but rather how he sees them. (Matthew 7:21-23) He said that in order for us as individuals to be recognized as his followers, we must do the will of his Father in the heavens. Most professed Christians are not doing that. They either are unrepentantly doing or agreeing with things that the Bible condemns outright, and such ones who will be included in suffering the wrath that all nations will suffer. -Matthew 7:13, 14.

  • It was founded by Protestants. These type of Christians are very accepting towards other religions. In fact, being religiously oppressed themselves they decided to establish a government with freedom of religion. U R WELCOME

It's a nation founded on moral and Christian values with "freedom of religion"....

In what sense? A majority of citizens are Christian. However, the government is prohibited from forcing any religion on any citizens.

We have FREEDOM OF RELIGION, NOT FROM IT. However, America was founded on Christian principals, not other religions.

It can be considered a Christian nation if the majority of people within the nation are Christian, but most aren't. Most are split between non-denominational beliefs, Christianity and atheism.

It's a Christian nation, the rule of law is based on judeo-christian values. Most of us have biblical names. The words "separation of church and state" do not appear in the Declaration of Independence or the Constitution, they only appear in a letter written by Jefferson

How to be a good Republican:

    1. You have to believe that the AIDS virus is spread because people are evil and should be punished.

    2. You have to believe that the evolution is a myth that shouldn't be taught in schools, despite the evidence of biochemistry and the fossil record.

    3. You have to believe that there is no causal link between legal, easily-obtainable handguns and high murder rates.

    4. You have to believe that global temperatures are completely unaffected by fossil fuel emissions, that the best way to save the national forests is to allow logging companies to cut down old-growth timber, and the best way to save endangered species is to allow trophy hunters and wildlife traders to import more of them.

    5. You have to believe that homosexuality is evil (despite the fact that it occurs in nature) and that women should stay at home to cook and bear children.

    6. You have to be against abortion but support capital punishment.

    7. You have to believe that businesses never purposely hurt anyone to make money.

    8. You have to believe that hunting requires an automatic rifle.

    9. You have to believe that inherited wealth is more important than actually doing something to earn it.

    10. You have to believe that war is an acceptable solution to any economic or social problem.

    11. You have to believe that everyone should support the troops - except when it comes to paying them.

    12. You have to believe the NRA is good because it supports certain parts of the Constitution, while the ACLU is bad because it supports certain parts of the Constitution.

    13. You have to believe that taxes are for poor and middle class people, not the rich.

    14. You have to believe that affirmative action is wrong, while still supporting discrimination against minorities.

    15. You have to believe that Ann Coulter is normal and really a very nice person.

    16. You have to believe that the only reason supply-side economics hasn't worked anywhere it's been tried is because the right people haven't been in charge.

    17. You have to believe liberals telling the truth belong in jail.

    18. You have to believe that the Ten Commandments should be displayed in every public building regardless of the fact that not everyone in America is a Christian.

    19. You have to believe that illegal Republican Party funding by corporations is somehow in the best interest of the United States.

    20. You have to believe that the media are biased toward liberals, despite the fact that all the major media outlets are owned by ultra-rich conservative
