Do adult possums grow big as a huge fat black cat?

Question

Last night found a huge black furry creature on the window sill outside
my 2nd floor apartment. Scared me because I heard all this noise
and when I peeked out the blinds there was this huge pointy faced
thing staring right back at me haha. He kept scratching at my window 
but even though I kept banging and slapping at the glass to shoo him
away, he wouldn't move. Can they climb up and down fire escapes?

Yes, they climb.

It's unlikely, but it could have been a skunk.  They also have a pointy face.  However, the 'possum's face is pretty distinctive - it looks like Satan's housecat.  Dreadful looking critters.  And they can be kind of dark, too.

There are possums in my neighborhood, and though I haven't seen then myself, my mom says that they are bigger than cats.
It does sound like a possum.

possums are GREY!!!!  they look NOTHING like a cat.  their teeth are huge, much bigger than a cat's.

could be a racoon or a possum. they both can climb..
