your sister is wrong. That date does NOT say expired..read it again.

eggs don't spoil according to a calendar date.

If you are unsure, crack on into a bowl and look at it.

Nice and yellow yolk, off white clear white surrounding the egg?

    No smell?

    Your egg is fine.

And will be for a month or more.

Eggs last a very long time.

Roy is right, floating the egg has NOTHING to do with whether an egg is fresh or not, it has to do with the age of the egg, not freshness.

An egg that floats is simply an older egg. Not a spoiled egg.

And this is according to USDA.

Your eggs will be good until, when you crack one open, it smells bad. Eggs will typically be fine for a couple of MONTHS after the 'Sell By' date. And, for the umpteenth time, the 'float test' is NOT an indicator that an egg is spoiled, only that it's not quite fresh!! The ONLY way to tell is by cracking it open. I can't believe how many people are still pushing that erroneous myth.

"What does it mean when an egg floats in water?

An egg can float in water when its air cell has enlarged sufficiently to keep it buoyant. This means the egg is old, but it may be perfectly safe to use. Crack the egg into a bowl and examine it for an off-odor or unusual appearance before deciding to use or discard it. A spoiled egg will have an unpleasant odor when you break open the shell, either when raw or cooked. "

Your sister is totally misguided!! Eggs are good for at least a month after the "sell by" date on the package!!

If in doubt, put the eggs in a sink full of cool water and see if they float. If they come up to the top, toss them in the trash.

If they lay happily on the bottom you can use them how ever you like.

If they dance around on the bottom, boil them for hardboiled as they will peel best this way. I love deviled eggs and usually use up all the eggs before they start dancing on the bottom of the bowl!! Hard to peel when they are too fresh.
