3 contract sim in 2g PAYG phone?

I have an IPhone 4s, which is a risky job when I.m out a lot. So I'm considering buying a cheap pay as you go phone. But would my sim work in it? Would it work in a sim free phone? Thanks

If it is a Three (UK) network sim, it will not work in an old phone. The phone will need 3G connectivity for the sim card to work.

Any other UK network such as O2, Vodafone, Orange, T-Mobile, will however, work in an older phone.

There are cheaper 3G phones about now, and if you are worried about your iPhone, you could always insure it, and get Find My iPhone/iCloud set up on it, so if you ever lost it, you could track it's location (as long as it had enough credit or internet data left, and battery of course!).
