Trouble installing Mac OS X Snow Leopard from DVD?

I just recently called Apple Care and got them to send me a DVD with Mac OS X Snow Leopard on it. I still have 10.5.8 and whenever I put the DVD into my Macbook it either ejects it or will not open and end up not ejecting until I restart my laptop completely. How can I install this? Or do I need to go to the Apple Store and have them look at it? I need a quick solution because I go back to school Saturday and I need this update.

Update:

I didn't scratch it... I took it right out of the packaging and put it into the computer.

Update 2:

What will the last part do? Nothing happened when I did that.

Did you drop the DVD and scratch it? If not, maybe you don't have a dual-layer drive. Check in System Profiler. For any white case 2006 Model Identifier "MacBook1,1" the DVD drive cannot read dual-layer.

About This Mac > More Info (Opens System Profiler). Look for "Model Identifier".

To remove a DVD that is not mounted (not seen in a Finder window), restart while holding the click for 45 seconds.

If you have a dual-layer drive, and the DVD is not damaged....

-- Restart while holding the option key for 45 seconds.

    -- Insert the DVD.

-- Wait at least two minutes.

    EDIT:

Did you CHECK THE MODEL IDENTIFIER AS I MENTIONED? Do that before you keep trying to make a cat bark.

The last part will remove the OS software from the picture. It makes the drive and the firmware the only parts of the equation. Now you know there is nothing you can do to make this DVD work in this drive. You can use another drive. Three ways to do that....

-- Connect an external DL DVD drive.

-- Use another Mac with Firewire and DL DVD drive while this one is in target disk mode.

-- Use CD/DVD Sharing. Can be used with a Windows or OS X system that has DL DVD drive. Look it up at support.apple.com
