Windmill pitching advice? (Fastpitch Softball) Please answer!!!?
I have a dilemma:
I have been pitching windmill for about three years now, but have been pitching "around" one big problem: I don't open or close. I have managed to move my arm in a way that keeps it possible to throw a strike, but not as constant as I would like. My pitching coach wants me to learn to open and close, and I am really trying. I am doing full motion without throwing the ball and I am opening and closing perfectly fine. However, the second I think to throw the ball, my body immediately goes back to its habits and I throw a perfect strike, but with my foot straight. Also, I don't even know if I should start to learn O/C because I just got a pitching spot on a fall team and our next game is in two weeks, and I'm nervous I would be in the middle of O/C training and I wouldn't be as accurate as I would like. I was wondering if some pitchers could help me with whether or not I should start training, or wait till the winter. Also, maybe some drills that could help?

You are going back to old habits because your guiding the ball also known as trying to hard. You just need to practice open close without worrying where the ball goes. So just do a pitching session with just doing open close without working on accuracy.

You certainly have a dilemma. I would tell you to find another pitching coach. Open and close? I know it's commonly accepted to do "Monkey see Monkey do" but the time it takes and the coordination necessary to close exactly as you release the ball actually detracts from your ability to generate speed with accuracy. Think of this for a moment if your closing in order to complete your motion what was the purpose of the opening in the first place? Opening and closing does not generate speed it slows you down. Speed generation comes primarily from the bending and straightening cycle of the arm and wrist snap, just like overhand, and being square to the target at release gives you a consistent position to release the ball. Driving your body forward, leading with your head not your foot, into your, "square" landing position with your leg is also a key. If your belly button is not directly at the catcher when you land and simultaneously release the ball you will not maximize your speed. Trying to square up and time your arm to be there at exactly the right moment tells me that your coach is very limited. All you have to do is watch tape of Michelle Smith and Lorie Harrigan, both Olympic pitchers but I'm sere there are many others, to see that they never open and therefore don't have to close. They both bend their elbows as their arm passes over their head and straightens at the hip and bends again just prior to the release. Their elbow is controlled at the hip for a consistent release position. This generates extreme speed by engaging the Triceps muscle, just like overhand, to generate "Forarm" speed followed by a violent wrist snap to transfer the kinetic energy. Basically the arm is a lever system and each joint plays a part in making your arm act like a whip with a snap at the end like a real whip. Most pitching coaches have you lock your elbow, absolutely wrong, and swing your arm fast in a circle which necessitates opening because your scapula, shoulder bone, is in your way when you try to swing it in a circle so you have to open. Then they want you to close so you're not throwing across your body. Bending your elbow and staying square as possible is what the fastest pitchers do. Men generate speeds in excess of 100 MPH on a regular basis. Is it reasonable that they swing their arm in a circle that fast? Like I said you need a new coach.

Fast pitch is WAY greater. You truthfully ought to have proficiency to pitch rapid-pitch, and also you definately want proficiency to hit rapid-pitch. Watch a rapid-pitch recreation someday. One can inform such a lot, if no longer all avid gamers in the market are truthfully pleasant athletes. Then watch a neighborhood rec league sluggish-pitch recreation. Half of the folks in the market weigh four hundred lbs!!!!!!
