Real life is always a disappointment. No matter how carefully one plans, there are always unanticipated surprises as well as irrelevant distractions from the main action in a literal narrative. A protestor or a bully appears. The mayor's hat falls off and rolls under the stage. The spring on the trap gets stuck. It rains in the middle of the presentation. King Lear forgets his line. A story offers a chance to get it right, to make the meaning clear, to show how it should go. Stories, even "bad examples", make better moral illustrations than step-by-step instructions. You can show motivations and consequences with a story. Unfortunately, some people get so caught up with the story telling that they value it over the message they mean to convey. The story becomes more important than its meaning and it is no longer allowed to change and grow in response to the changing world of its listeners. Then it becomes myth. The message is still useful, but not quite relevant to the times. The characters and the details become iconic heroes rather than models of behavior. Their specific acts are more important than their intentions and they become meaningless for our own lives, mere "history". Stories are most useful when they are kept fresh.
