If I let someone borrow a gun that is registered in my name, what exactly is the liability involved?

Its for a camping trip and I'm not at all worried about her committing a crime with the gun, but moreso if an accident happened with it.

Update:

I'm in South Carolina btw if that makes any difference.

Is the person to whom you are "loaning" a firearms legally allowed to own or even possess one? YOU can be held responsible, in part, for anything that happens if it can be proven that you knew beforehand she was incompetent, or just plain dangerous. Check with law enforcement but I believe federal law prohibits "loaning" a firearm to anyone. If she "loses" it and it is found by someone of less than stellar repute, your liability may increase.

Just sayin', I personally recommend you NOT loan a firearm to anyone who will be out of sight.

You are responsible for whatever she does with it. If anybody gets hurt, you are going to be partially responsible.

Depends on how good your lawyer is and how stupid the jury is.
