It was a joke, and I don't THINK he meant anything malicious by saying it. The trouble is, statements like that are dog whistles to the lunatic fringe on the right. We have free speech, but there is an associated responsibility that comes with the freedom. Or it could have been totally purposeful, again, a dog whistle, to throw a little red meat to the true believers. In the past, the republicans have appeased the true believers prior to the election with promises of illegal abortion and mandatory prayer in school, only to blow them off after the election. Those people are finally coming to their senses and voting on other true believers. The trouble is, some of them are winning, which is why you end up Bachmans and Akins. The right have built a monster, and they must get it under control all we'll have left is prayer, because our kids will be to stupid to compete on the international level.

The fact that Texas is now the prime mover for text book content may not be a sign of the apocalypse, but it should be.
