I've hiked most of the AT between Killington VT and Katahdin ME. A comfortable pace is about 2 miles an hour, throw in some breaks and you can get 13 miles in 8 hours. The terrain and trail surface is very diverse. In NH, 13 miles a day is a big day because is tough conditions. Down south I hear people can rock 20 miles a day.

    b) 2160 total miles / 13 miles a day = 166 days.

That sounds about right. I hear the average is 5-6 months on the trail.

    wild guess ....

    a) 2160 total miles * 5288 feet per mile / 2.5 feet per step = 4,568,832 steps
