What is the justification for a continued military campaign in Afghanistan?

And is that justification REALLY a justification, or is it just an excuse?

I commonly hear people say that the Taliban is the enemy and they need to be removed from power.

Some will say that we've just got to completely destroy al Qaeda, and since the Taliban are in cahoots with them then the Taliban is the enemy too.

In case you haven't noticed, the war effort is not going well. It has taken a decade and trillions of taxpayer dollars.

If you believe the cause is legitimate, then what is the justification for a continued, full-scale military campaign in Afghanistan?

It's more to do with a trillion $ worth of resources in Afghanistan, than a military campaign against the taliban.

It was reported today that 17 people were beheaded by the Taliban in Afghanistan. Two women and fifteen men, beheaded.

    Their crime?

They had a party with music and dancing.

    That's it.

The Taliban required no other reason. Just music and dancing and it's enough to kill over. I think that is justification because if NATO pulled out, the Taliban would have Afghanistan in their hands within a few years. Every single man, woman and child would be under the cruel law of Shariah as the Islamics of the Taliban enforces it.

I really don't want to see that. And seeing as the trillions of dollars are all on credit and paper moves then I feel that it's worth the lives saved.

We in the western world are living in a credit bubble and when it bursts all the trillions we've spent on their lives isn't going to matter anyways. The big suits will still have their luxurious lives and the likes of you and I will have to scrabble for our daily meals.

So ... for now? Let the innocent live without fear of the Islamic run Taliban.

No justification, just a failed attempt at nation building begun in the Bush administration and continued by Obama. The military has made progress in the country, but the sad thing is as soon as there is no presence the country will revert back to what it was, a sandy mass of tribal conflict. This country has managed to financially break 2 super powers.

Your policy was in practice during the Clinton administration. The end result: Al Qaeda was protected by the Taliban in Afghanistan and the USA was attacked in 9/11.

If the Taliban takes control over Afghanistan again then Al Qaeda will be protected again. Only this time they will use nuclear weapons, biological weapons, and other WMD.

    Is that what you want?
