Info on Twitter for new user.?

Sorry...a Twitter novice.. To send someone a message, you prefix it with @ sign.. What does the # hashtag do.???? Any other useful commands.??

    the #hashtag is basically like a search term... or just like something you would put in paranthesis

    Example:

    @ColinHanks (the actor) just tweeted: ColinHanks: What is the most embarrassing record in your record collection? Remember mark it #QTIME

    By using #QTIME-- his "people" can search on twitter easier... (it actually means question time) it makes looking up topics easier and there are trending topics on twitter that show what is popular and what people are talking about..

    you hashtag parts of your message that relate to something in pop culture or to keep track of a convo between you're friends or something :)
