Why does the Lewis Dot structure for Bromine hav 7 dots around it?

its for my chemistry class i dont really understand how they got the 7 dots.. i mean i know the dots represent electrons but doesnt bromine hav 35 electrons? im so confused >.<

Update:

but theres only 1 electron in the outer shell...do i subtract that number from the 8 that complete a lds? is thaat how u got the 7?

Because you only draw out the valence electrons i.e. the ones in the outer shell

the other 28 are in the inner shells and don't participate in bond forming etc, only the 7 in the outermost shell are available

There are 7 in the outer shell. the electron configuration of bromine is [Ar] 3d10 4s2 4p5

so there are 2 in the 1st shell, 8 in the 2nd, 18 in the 3rd and 7 in the 4th which is the outer shell
