What's the deal with Walsall, England?

Since my job leaves me with copious amounts of time to dream about riding and to conduct research, my new hobby has become leaning more about english saddles.

It seems like all of the saddles I come across that I acually like are ALL made in the same city. Walsall, England. Thoroughbred, Moritz, Crosby, Ainsley, etc. The list just keeps going!

Why is Walsall such an active hub for saddle making?

We've got a similar place here in the states... it's called Texas haha. But even as a huge state, it's not nearly as active in producing so many saddle brands as that little English town.

So, what's the deal with Walsall?

Well obviously Walsall is better than Texas! Want to be a saddler, go to Walsall. Want a well-made saddle, buy from a Walsall saddler.

I believe Walsall was a strong place for loriners (long before the USA was even invented!) due to all the "raw materials" being so easily available in the area. The leather workers joined them in the 19th century and drew on the loriners' skills, and the town became a place where you could get all your tack not just your bits and stirrups. It all grew from there, and now all the best saddlers are Walsall-based or at least Walsall-trained.

I live in the UK, but I'm near Reading in Berkshire.

According to Wikipedia, it is a large industrial town and was originally used for coal, but when the coal ran out they swapped to the leather trade, which obviously included the saddles.

Due to the transport networks provided by originally moving coal out of the town to wherever it was headed, means loads of saddles could be made and shipped out of there very quickly, probably for very little money so more money could be used on materials and employees so they could churn out more saddles - you see where I'm going with this?

My newest saddle, bought a couple of years ago, is a Heritage working hunter saddle, made in Walsall - my show saddle, however, was made by a very small saddlery in Olney, which was bought out by Derby House (apparently if you go into their shop in Olney and go upstairs, they still have a few of the last saddles made by the saddlers there, but have really taken over with their stock. A shame as my saddle is a very nice, very comfy saddle)

In countries the place racism isn't the huge difficulty that's right here, it incredibly is via fact there is little separatization. you do not see a separation of the races such as you do right here. With black faculties, black television channels, black music, black clothing, etc. it incredibly is not labeled that way. All may well be enjoyed by using every person who chooses to. every time one phase chooses to chop up themselves, then call for equality, it incredibly is going to never paintings. there's a great difference between recognizing your background, and figuring out with purely that background. definite, we've separated the races at one time. That became incorrect even though it incredibly is not precise for the different separation to be in effect the two. It in basic terms would not paintings that way. look at different oppressed peoples, mutually with Asians or Jewish human beings, and spot how they integrated. that's the way it does paintings.
