I'm ready to get my first tattoo and I need some advice?

I want to get a 3D tattoo and I have no idea what the average cost of such a tattoo will be. To be honest I have no idea how much any tattoo might cost though I am aware that the bigger the tattoo, the more it cost. Can anyone give me any ideas?

Update:

I don't think price will be an issue unless it will cost a thousand dollars! LOL I've already saved just over 300 and I live north of Greenville TX. There are tattoo shops in and around the area but I can't find one (so far) that mentions or shows 3D body art.

Update 2:

a 3D tattoo is just what is sounds like a tattoo that looks 3D I saw a tat of a butterfly that looked like it had just landed on a girls shoulder. It was on the tattoo page on facebook. Really cool, I'm wavering between bugs, butterfly, ladybug, dragon fly or maybe even a colorful tree frog...

The ones with shadows, you mean? I have one of a scorpion. Freaks people out all the time, haha. Don't say 3D to the artists you ask, just show them an example. (printed photo or something)

The price of tattoos are usually decided by size, amount of colors, placement and how long it will take to complete. Ask around at some shops.

    Good luck!

No alcohol before or after until it's stopped bleeding. Wear something you don't mind getting messy from a mixture of ink, blood, vasaline/gel from off your skin. Note you will also get some blood/plasma and surface ink come off overnight which can stain your sheets/pillows etc. Take bottled water because after 2-3 hours you are probably going to need a drink, especially if you've been chatting during the process. Resist the urge to remove what ever it has been covered with to take a peak - you need to leave it on for at least an hour. Listen carefully to your artist's aftercare advice and do not pick the scab.

Tattoos are (usually) based off of three category's: size, detail and color/black and white. It also depends on the shop you get it done at. I'm from Dallas and it is 5x more expensive to get it done in the city as opposed to going to a place out of the city a little. I have MANY tats and the rule of thumb is usualy that a tat the size of your fist is about $100. Tats are one area that I don't mind spending a few extra bucks to get a good artist that will do a good job, so if your low on funds I recomend saving a little longer and getting it done right. "Good tattoos arnt cheap and cheap tattoos are not good" Congrats on getting your first ink and good luck.

    WTF is a "3D" tattoo?

Like a subdermal implant? Or will people need special glasses to see the 3D effect?
