Sherlock the tv series is an updated to Modern times show and is very Loosely based on some of the stories/books
the books were written & set in the Victorian era so they are different from the current Sherlock series
the Sherlock Holmes series with Jeremy Brett was more faithful to the original stories

pretty sure the tv shows are all adaptations or 'based on characters created by...' etc...
