1.00 EUR = 0.792202 GBP (today the 29th)
The small bill of €5.00 is about 4 GBP. If you can multiply in your head the amount in Euros by 4 you get the closest idea how much you pay for goods without using the a pocket calculator.
Anyway better check in a Portuguese daily newspaper(Diário de Noticias) the official rate when you land. Banks must practise those rates but pay attention to the percentage on the top of it. In some is small, others ask for a considerable amount. Ask before.
Sometimes it pays, or not, to change in a Exchange Agency not connected to any Bank.
Close to Banks and Agency's you might be approached by someone offering a better rate. Never accept it especially in places crowded with tourists like most the Algarve. Albufeira,Faro,Lagos,Monte Gordo and so on is a disaster and they can be quite persistent.
This is the site I fallow when I need. Is updated all the time.
Portugal does not have a especial exchange rate for Euro. The price is the same in any European country using it.
