Patenting Double click functions?

So now we are handing out patents for the program code that is launched when the user double clicks or double taps the screen. Apple won a law suit where they claim the rights to the idea that double tapping launches the zoom code function. Isn't this just a bit idiotic? How is that an invention?

That is an excellent question, the sort I've asked many times myself. What I find most distressing is the number of patents being handed out for discoveries of genetic sequences. While it's useful to know about these things, to have control of them in the hands of big pharma companies is worrisome. After all, God (or Mother Nature or whatever name you care to give) is the inventor. No individuals or corporations should be able to control these things. USPTO wouldn't give a trademark to the word "Good", or "Free", or "New" - these are concepts clearly in the public domain, as they should be, and so should the things we are talking about. Score another win for corporatocracy.

For @Doug: it is axiomatic that NOBODY can own any patents on naturally occurring materials such as DNA; however, they can artificially isolate certain genes and patent the process of using them in new and non-obvious ways.

As for the double-tap patent, if anyone has killer "prior art" that would prove that each and every element of the Apple patents were known or obvious, then that prior art could invalidate the entire patent.

Gee, I wonder of Samsung has any patent attorneys who thought of that before filing their reply brief...
