Teacher study days; are they taking the mick?

Children are returning to school on Friday (which particular bright spark thought that one up?) and on the following monday the school is closed for a teacher study day! Any chance they might have squeezed this day into the ridiculously long holiday they've just enjoyed or even cancelled school on friday to do it then?

ahh but you may not be thinking it through.

The day is not a vacation day. It is to plan out the new year. Why not do that on friday instead and have the students return *after* the meeting day? good question - but here is what you are not considering....

we need to know who the students are to plan effectively. You would be surprised at the percentage of students who do not show up and have left to other schools....

We need to know who is in which class, the percentage of students with special needs, language and math levels in each class. We need to know the numbers to divide them effectively into heterogeneous groups... lots we cannot do withourt the students actually entering school.

You have a negative assumption about your schools - why is that>?
