why not just make the roof a solar panel? or is it just me? :))

There are solar powered electric cars. There are races all over the world for solar-powered cars (e.g 'The Word Solar Challenge').
They are ultra-lightweight, ultra-hightech vehicles, with almost every flat surface devoted to solar panels.
They can each cost hundreds of thousands of pounds to build and yet they still only develop about 3bhp (the same as a moped). That's why it's pointless for road vehicles.

You don't have much of a grasp of electricity, do you?
You MIGHT just power the radio on a sunny day off the power generated from a solar panel the size of a car's roof, but you'll never make the car move.

It's just you.
It wouldn't produce nearly enough power to drive the car.
They've experimented with solar powered cars in places like Australia. Still not enough power to drive anything more than a go kart. Slowly.

My God! I think you've solved the worlds energy crisis, I can't think of one reason why your idea can't work. Why has'nt anyone thought of this before? Must go now and lie down in a dark room.
