What are those very hard, green, apple-shaped fruit seen in temperate zones.?

I've found a few lying around and the squirrels seem to like them.

Temperate zones in what country? In the U.S they're most likely black walnuts (Juglans nigra), if they're about 2" in diameter and squirrels take them. They could also be Osage oranges, if they're 3-4" and knobby, paw paws if they're oblong and smooth, or actually green apples, which are hard and also eaten by squirrels occasionally.
