Why does my heel slide sideways inwards when I run?

I wear crosstraining shoes when I run outdoors. During my run, my gait becomes "off" because my right heel slides inwards, towards my left foot, which makes me lead off of my right pinky toe more.

Could it be a mixture of socks and sweat, improper shoes, lacing issues, or combination or none of the above. I'm new to the running world. Any help or suggestions would be great.

Go to a specialty running store and they will watch you run, mold your feet, etc and they will then try and sell you a pair of shoes than can cost $100+. Try on the shoes they give you, note the ones that feel best and then go research to see if you can find them online for cheaper. They can give you advice on high tech socks and lacing habits.
