New rules in the very near future, including NO more contact with another player allowed?

After the suspensions of Steve Johnson, Leigh Montagna and James McDonald this past weekend, I am now calling it; There will be NO contact allowed in AFL by 2013. Although these incidents would have been just a normal occurance just 10 years ago, nowadays players are getting suspended, because Andrew Demitriou does not want any player to get a bruise (it'll scare the little kiddies away from playing the game, you see). Also in the new rules, they are discussing putting players in zones before the ball is bounced up in the middle. If this does get through, then expect to see your footy heroes wearing skirts, and bibs with "C", "WA" or "GS". Are there any other rules that I haven't thought of yet, that will be introduced next season?

I'm a boss and so is the AFL so I'll put the case this way...... Remove the threat of sueing the AFL into oblivion for injury sustained playing the AFL owned code, now or during the lifetime of an ex player, and the AFL would gladly remove the increasing safeguards it has to build into the system to protect itself from litigation.

Every year the list of current & ex players increases by 150+ .... after 30 odd years there are now over 5000 potential lawsuits for AFL injury compensation walking round and a class action suit in the future could sink the whole ship. This fear hangs over the head of every boss and the AFL is already

embroiled in an alleged brain damage case from a player who retired over 20 years ago.

The AFL is only REACTING in the same way as any other boss who has to enforce WH&S dictates.

Blame the Litigation Society we have created for starting this, not those who have to bear responsibility for the stupid actions of the minority.

I think the geniuses at the AFL might be able to kill 2 birds with 1 stone. I’ll explain.

Players in recent years are sustaining an increasing number of soft tissue damage due to work overload and also there has been new research into the long term effects of concussions on the brain, the AFL is subsequently looking to act by sanitising the game of contact.

Perhaps if the preseason was to be confined to the beginning of the new year then both of these issues could be improved. It would be hard to police players training in the basement of their houses obviously but intraclub training would be prohibited, so Visy Park/Lexus Centre etc. could not be used by any listed AFL player before the designated preseason starts. With concussions I’m not certain if the numbers have increased in recent years or not but if they have a likely cause is the increasing size of the players. There are some ridiculously jacked players in the AFL and if another player gets hit they’re going to get injured more often than not (physics). So to counteract this a reduced preseason could mitigate the ever increasing size of players. Guy McKenna has announced his grand plan to copycat the physiques of the Crows players in the coming years, I hope the preseason is shortened before this can happen.

All the skill will evaporate from Aussie Rules if in the next few years we have the proposed additional substitute, player zones and no contact introduced.

Couldn't agree more, except let me tell you netball is a rugged game!! (at least compared to where Andy wants aussie rules). Some freaking consistency would be good too.

Don't forget Heath Grundy, yeaahh that was an elbow but it's not like the player went down with a broken jaw or writhing in pain (we don't have Ballantyne and Schneider playing for us) - at worst that should have been 1 game reduced to a reprimand, much like Chappy's which was no more than a back hander.

I reckon I gave and copped 200 of those Chappy/ Grundy/ Johnson type hits in my career and was never reported and never had a guy reported for one. I love that Johno helped Hanneberry to his feet :-)

EDIT: I propose that instead of a ruck contest we should give the ball back to the girl with the "C" bib to re-start the game with a centre pass (alternating teams with each goal)

As a rugby league supporter as well, the same thing is happening there. The powers that be don't want to upset the mums and have their children pulled from the game

Though BH, I have seen some netball games which have been considerably more violent than any league, union or AFL game I have seen..

    I can see that happening......

Sorry BH-SA...I can write up a long answer to this question, as I know where you are coming from. I have mentioned my feelings and views on this topic many times before and most recent as last week.

I don't want to sound like a broken record, so I better not answer the way I want to. Next....the players will be wearing skirts.
