How long does it take to get inheritance?

If a widow dies and her will is clearly written out to divide her assets between her two children, how long would it take for the children to receive any money or property?

My wife may be losing her mother soon, and depending on the timing, I may encourage her to quit her job (that she hates) and spend the time with our daughter. But we still have bills to pay and my salary alone won't cut it.

Depends on how the assets are titled. My mother had most of her assets in Transfer on Death accounts (sometimes called Pay on Death accounts). Those were transferred as soon as we provided a death certificate. They also avoid probate.

The balance which was a car and personal effects took about a year to settle.

depends different factors. mostly if there are any other relatives that try to contest it. if anyone else were to try and say that some of the money would be owed to them they could tie the money up filing court documents and having hearings for years. I would strongly suggest she keep her job until the check is "in the mail"

there may also be different laws depending on where you live that dictate a waiting period.

Or mom could suddenly recover, you never know for sure until it happens.

Most states REQUIRE probate to remain open so that all creditor claims can be addressed and will not allow distribution of any assets untill that time passes.
