Short notes vs. staccatto notes on strings?

I am arranging some music, and writing out some string parts. I am having a cello play a bassline in short, detached notes. Will there be much of a difference between writing eighth notes interspersed with eighth rests, and just putting staccatto dots on quarter notes?

I agree with the above poster, the skill of the players makes a big difference.

Do you want the notes to be eighth notes, or do you want a staccato? You might as well write what you really want.

The difference is, staccato notes are of undefined length, they can be shorter than eighth notes depends on how the musician interprets it.

Whereas eighth notes interspersed with rests have a fixed length.

It depends on how good the players are.

If they are professionals they will play the staccatos good and short. If they are amateurs, the rests will mean they focus on playing shorter notes.
