Why are British pound written pound "Sterling" what does sterling mean?

Like the title said, I just don't understand the meaning of the word sterling.

Is there a difference between a British Pound vs British Pound Sterling?

    At one time, the British Pound Sterling was just that - a pound (454 grams) of sterling silver.

    After hundreds of years, the name stuck.The British Pound and British Pound Sterling are one and the same.

    Sterling is a precious metal which is between 99.25 and 99.99% pure silver.

    A British Pound is paper money.
