What is the purpose of immunization? The purpose of vaccination, or immunization, is to artificially induce active immunity so there will be resistance to the pathogen upon natural exposure in the future. Vaccinations are prepared under laboratory conditions from either dead or severely weakened antigens.
In effect this teaches the immune system to recognise an infection so that it can be ready to defend the body against it.
What is the standard schedule - when it is given and how often?
This depends on the particular disease being vaccinated against - some need only one injection others two or three. With diseases that evolve quickly like influenza vaccination is given every year.
What are common side effects?
Usually no more than soreness at the site of injection. Though some few people may be allergic to some of the preservatives in some vaccines.
