you can search free dvd burner. I know pavtube dvd creator is free, but you need to buy their blu-ray ripper.

you can but your files will be corrupt if you dont have the correct codecs for them.
Its best to convert the files to mpeg than burn them as dvd
once they are converted to mpeg just use your dvd recorder software to create a dvd and thats it.
try k3b burner
If your running linux depending on the flavor
in terminal you would type one of the following
sudo apt-get install k3b
sudo apt-get update
sudo aptitude install k3b
sudo apttitude safe-upgrade
sudo yum install k3b
sudo yum update
after each install make sure you update your repos.
in mac you can use the finder to see if there is a port for k3b
