Mixing DI water & Ethyl Alcohol?
Why is it when you mix DI water and Ehtyl alcohol you get an exothermic reaction BUT
when you add ethyl alcohol FIRST then DI water then you get no reaction???
Does it have to do with density??

Absolute alcohol has a tendency to absorb water, & the first few cc added to alcohol form H bonds, with release of heat. But if abs. alcohol is added to lot of water, we cannot 'feel' the heat released. However , a good temp. sensor can record the minute' heat of solution' , as it is called. Pl. recollect :
The lab. technique of preparation of dil. H2SO4 from conc. acid is : add small amounts of acid into ice cold water. The reverse addition can liberate a lot of heat & boil the added water !
