i need some explanation...?

Question

in this sentence:

"my knee did not bend and the leg dropped straight from the knee to the ankle without a calf, and the machine was to bend the knee and make it move as in riding a tricycle. "

 I don't understand what is wrong with the leg! can somebody explain it to me please?

and this one: "the snow powdered in the fur of the foxes and the wind blew their tails. 
and small birds blew in the wind and the wind turned their features."

does it mean that the snow was covering the furs and the wind moved the tails? and the birds were blowing in the wind?!!!!!!! does it refer to some kind of noise that the birds were making by blowing in the wind?

It seems that the leg had been injured so that the leg could not bend at the knee, as a normal leg can. Clearly I cannot comment on what sort of injury, perhaps the earlier story made that clear.   The reference "without a calf" is confusing, and I think you can ignore it.

Snow (fine. dusty-textured snow) was on the foxes.  The wind blew the fox tails (probably so that the tails moved, but movement is not actually mentioned). Probably the birds were clinging to branches and being buffetted by the wind, so they turned to face the wind, as perching birds normally do.   It is indeed unclear if the birds were perching or flying, but my guess is that they were perching.  In my opinion there is no reference to any bird noise.
