go look at the Seafarers International Union web site....almost all the sailors on the Lakes ( had to ) belong(ed) to the union.

I hope it wasn't the Edmund Fitzgerald. Nope just checked. It sank in 1975, so you are OK there. May the captain and crew rest in peace. You can check at the below link
