Do dental hygienists get carpal tunnel?

I was told in my lecture class its possible.

If so how often does this occur? How can it be prevented?

Anybody can get carpal tunnel and hygienists are no exception. Carpal tunnel happens to people who use their hands in the same position a lot. Ice packs and NSAIDs help.

There are two main causes of carpal tunnel: 1) the nerve rubbing against bone; 2) tissue rubbing against the nerve. I understand if the problem is the nerve rubbing against the bone, it is only correctable by surgery, to remove some of the bone. The other one can be relieved by finding out if one has a metabolic syndrome that is causing the tissues to "inflate". My problem was due to hypoglycemia (low blood sugar). Once I got my sugars under control, my carpal tunnel went totally away. In the short term, a wrist brace for night-time to keep your wrist in "anatomically neutral" position.
