I'm sure it came from ancient people watching animals break open the shells and eating the contents. Observing the animals and realizing they weren't getting sick or dying so why not give it a try.

I always wondered the same question about eggs. Who was the first guy to crack one of those open and say "that looks good enough to eat!"

But long before us, birds of prey were swooping down and snatching them up; flying high above rocks and dropping them, cracking them open. They do this still and i saw an eagle do this in france!! Oh and they do this with turtles too.
