Anyone watching live tonight (13 sept 2012) the hazardous asteroid 2012 QG42?
It just started at SLOOH
This asteroid is the second unexpected asteroid in the last 60 days to come close to earth. This one is expected to pass at about 7.4 times as far away as the moon. So about 1.75 million miles away from earth.

Considering they didn't know about it until last month makes it a little scary doesn't it.

It is not close at 1.75 million miles away, and not very large:
"This asteroid is between 190 to 430 meters (625 feet to 1,400 feet) wide and was first spotted by astronomers at the Catalina Sky Survey in Arizona on August 26.

Note that even at the upper limit of the size estimates, it is less than 0.5 km in diameter, below the 1 km limit for most of the current asteroid surveys. That explains why it was not found earlier, and it is not really scary at all. Note also that it is not classified as a "hazardous" object, but only "potentially hazardous" . This means that its orbit is not well enough defined yet to be able to state that it will not at some point in the future be on an impact course, but it is certainly not a threat on this pass. In all probability as its orbit is further refined, it will be determined to be no future threat. I would not allow my blood pressure to rise over this one.

7 times the distance from here to the moon is very far away. There are some within the next century that are expected to come closer than the moon's orbit, and those I'll be keeping track of and those could pose a possible threat, but not these.
