How should I staple a fabric backing to a wooden chair?

I have an Ikea chair, and after a while, the padding starts to slide thru the slats, so I bought some heavy canvas to use as a backing material. I us this chair a LOT (at minimum, several hours a day, usually more), so the durability of these staples and holding the fabric properly is key.

a) Any general advice? I know not to stretch the fabric tightly, or it's more likely to stretch/tear... Anything else?

b) Should I staple vertically? Horizontally? Alternate?

If you look at other fabric covered pieces, the staples are always horizontal to the direction the fabric will be pulled, so that would be the way to go.

If I were doing it, I'd use my heavy duty staple gun paired with heavy duty 1/4" staples. Those staples won't budge without a pair of pliers or a screw driver to loosen them.
